Homemade is almost always best, and that certainly goes for lasagna! Unfortunately, traditional lasagna is time-consuming and kind of a pain really. This recipe is perfect for busy nights or whenever you want a delicious meal in a hurry.

I like to serve this lasagna with a simple Italian salad and of course, some cheesy garlic bread never hurt anyone!

    Ingredients and Substitutions

ingredients for lazy lasagna including ground beef, marinara sauce, ravioli, mozzarella cheese, italian seasoning, salt, and pepper
    • Meat: I used ground beef but you could use ground turkey or Italian sausage. You can also leave the meat out and make this vegetarian.
    • Marinara Sauce: I use my easy homemade low-carb marinara but any sauce that you like will work well.
    • Seasoning: Since the sauce I use is super flavorful, I keep the seasoning very simple just using Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. You can add additional Italian seasoning, garlic, diced onion, basil, or any seasoning that you like.
    • Cheese: I suggest using mozzarella cheese, but a shredded Italian blend would also work really nicely. I also prefer to use sliced mozzarella for the center of the lasagna layers, and shredded cheese for the top.
    • Ravioli: I much prefer using refrigerated cheese ravioli as opposed to frozen. I think that it has a much better texture and more consistent flavor. However, you can use frozen ravioli.

See the recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Before you start cooking this lazy lasagna, set your oven to preheat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9x13" pan with non-stick spray.

marinara sauce with ground beef in a large skillet with a wooden spoon.

Cook the ground beef in a large skillet with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. When the meat is fully cooked, drain the grease and add the marinara along with 1 cup of water.

Spread a half cup of the marinara in the bottom of your prepared pan. Next add a layer of the ravioli, followed by half of the remaining marinara and beef, and then a layer of cheese.

Repeat all of the layers ending with cheese. Cover the pan with aluminum foil.

Bake the covered casserole in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 - 20 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown.

Allow the lasagna to cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Tip: If you use frozen ravioli there is no need to add water to the marinara sauce. You will also need to increase the baking time to 45 minutes covered, and 20 minutes uncovered.

    Variations

There are so many ways to change up this recipe. Here are some of my favorites:

    • White Lazy Lasagna - Swap the marinara for alfredo sauce, and swap the beef for cooked and shredded chicken. You can also add some chopped spinach to the mix.
    • Different Ravioli Fillings - Try using ravioli with different fillings such as mushroom, spinach and ricotta, or beef.
    • Vegetarian - Omit the beef for a delicious meal perfect for meatless Mondays or any day really!

    Storage

Store the leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat leftovers in the microwave or oven until heated through.

You can also freeze leftovers for up to 6 months. It's best to allow the lasagna to thaw at least halfway before reheating in the oven or microwave.

    FAQs

Do I need to boil the ravioli before baking?

Nope 🙂 just place the uncooked ravioli into the casserole. For refrigerated ravioli, you will need to add 1 cup of water to the marinara, but for frozen ravioli no additional water is necessary. The ravioli will cook completely in the oven.

What should I serve with ravioli lasagna?

I like to serve ravioli with a simple Italian salad and some homemade cheesy garlic bread.

    Top tip:

    • If you use frozen ravioli there is no need to add water to the marinara sauce. You will also need to increase the baking time to 45 minutes covered, and 20 minutes uncovered.

I made this for dinner tonight. It hit all the marks: easy to make and delicious! I make my own sauce as well and wouldn't think of using jar sauce when it's so easy and better home made. This recipe is a keeper. I did not vary from it. Very nice. Thank you for a nice meal!
